Djokovic Delivers Warning to Jannik Sinner: Suspension Will Hang Over Him Like a "Shadow"

Novak Djokovic has cautioned Jannik Sinner that his three-month ban for doping will linger over his career like a "cloud" – and raised doubts about the scheduling of the penalty last year.

Details of the Suspension

Sinner completed a three-month suspension in early 2025 after the World Anti-Doping Agency approved his account that a prohibited performance-enhancing substance, clostebol, had entered his system accidentally.

"That cloud will follow him just as the cloud of Covid will follow me, for the rest of his, or my career," Djokovic stated in a discussion on a popular YouTube program.

"It's just something that, it was so major, and after such events, over time it will fade, but I don't think it will disappear. There will inevitably exist a certain group of people that will continually reference the incident."

Djokovic's Perspective

Djokovic expressed belief that Sinner, his frequent training companion, "didn't do it on purpose", but he then scrutinized how the player arranged to serve his time without missing a grand slam.

"The absence of openness, the inconsistency, the convenient timing of the suspension coming between the slams, so he avoids skipping important competitions – it simply appeared highly unusual," Djokovic added.

Broader Tennis Community Response

"I really don't like how the case was being handled and it was evident numerous fellow athletes, both male and female, who had some similar situations coming out in the media and asserting it represented favorable handling."
