Southport Perpetrator Thought to Have Viewed Youth Stabbing Footage Shortly Prior to Attack

A legal representative described it as “sobering and concerning” that the Southport attacker likely watched online material depicting a knife attack in another country by a young male just 40 minutes prior to committing his own crimes.

Investigation into Tragic Events

A public investigation is currently underway into the circumstances preceding the assault by the perpetrator, who was a teenager at the time, on 29 July 2024. In the attack, he killed three children and attempted to murder multiple minors and several older individuals.

On Tuesday, a representative outlined the scope of the inquiry, which will examine the sequence of events and interactions Rudakubana had with multiple state systems, including law enforcement, education, social care, and healthcare.

Deliberate Character of the Assault

Officials noted that the incident was “extremely cowardly” and deliberately focused on female victims. With the exception of one man injured during the event, all the other victims were female.

Moss referred to the attacker as a “heavy consumer of online content” and mentioned that the teenager had deleted his online activity prior to the attack. However, evidence indicated he had used another device to search for footage of a knife attack by a teenage boy in another country.

Online Platforms Under Scrutiny

Investigators has requested information from social media companies Facebook/Instagram’s parent and X regarding Rudakubana’s activity on their services. Officials stated that the individual had likely watched graphic material on the platform just before the attack.

“One could possibly think it alarming and troubling that almost the final action AR did before carrying out these terrible crimes was to look up and possibly view content on X in relation to a stabbing.”

Dangerous Items and Internet Purchases

The inquiry will also look into how the attacker acquired items such as blades, projectile weapons, and large knives by posing as an adult and using a fake identity. In addition, he ordered plant materials through Amazon to create a “crude preparation of ricin”.

Officials have requested comprehensive accounts from the attacker’s family members to determine their awareness of his internet purchases and the objects he stored in his room and home.

Continuing Inquiry

One key focus of the proceedings is to identify which agencies or bodies were responsible for ownership to intervene given the warning signs Rudakubana had demonstrated before the tragedy.

The chair of the inquiry vowed to do everything “humanly possible” to answer the questions of grieving relatives and survivors. Proceedings will carry on in the near future.
