Teenager Discovered Deceased Following False Allegations of Stealing Ashes
A teenage youth was found dead only a few days following being wrongly blamed of taking the ashes of a dead infant during a break-in, an inquest has learned.
Tragic Finding
Kai Lloyd's parents discovered his body in his room at his Flintshire residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Accusations Begin
The inquest heard how his mother received a message on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if her son was her offspring. The message stated: "Inform him thanks for breaking into my flat."
In a statement presented to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, asserting her baby's remains had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was untrue.
Police Inquiry
An investigation report from authorities later concluded the supposed burglary complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said property was not stolen in the first place".
Media reports about the supposed stolen ashes attracted online responses, and although Kai was not identified in the posts, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".
The "social media content were really distressing", she said.
Mental Wellbeing Effect
She added that her son had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' opinions genuinely mattered to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she commented, "particularly when this was not true".
The teenager was detained at home, but no evidence was found. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his death.
Withdrawal and Worry
His mother said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like days".
When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her child informed her he had entered the residence because the resident who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet whenever he wanted, but refuted removing anything.
Online Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being harassed online after the accusations.
The inquest heard that a 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no worries on the night before he passed away, describing how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".
She described him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "family is totally shattered".
He had been "obviously concealing his worries", she said, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "think bad of him".
School Reaction
The hearing received testimony from educational staff at Connah's Quay secondary school.
On 8 November, she "heard some boys discussing that Kai had been detained and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she added.
After the conversation, the staff member said she called the family's parents' landline and provided a message saying she had spoken to the student about the accusations.
The proceedings heard his family said they never got that communication.
Official Conclusion
Senior investigator informed the inquest he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of future fatalities report.
Delivering a narrative finding, he stated: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old child.
"Probably untruths were afterwards exaggerated and exaggerated through the medium of social media.
"On November 11th, he was questioned by the police and after his interview he was freed whilst inquiries continued."
The coroner determined: "Exists no proof that the actions or omissions of any agency led to or added to his passing and although it was the result of a self-inflicted action it is not possible to discern his purpose."
