The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Family-Friendly Preteen Romance

Throughout this cartoon journey for preteens, the fairy community focuses on gathering baby teeth of slumbering youngsters and leaving gold under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only slightly more interested in the financial workings of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who supply gold in exchange. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the ugly gnome he expected.

A Forbidden Connection and Common Enemy

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a light sprinkling of young love (though it’s very much suitable for children). The fairy and goblin groups are separated from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings as one. The two species portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet both maintain biased views about the other. The fairies are said to be self-centered sorts, prone to taking anything they want, while goblins are reportedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario requires a shared foe to join forces against, and this is duly provided by a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they make for quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

There aren’t very many children’s animations targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have first crushes, but are not old enough for the content 14-year-olds are watching in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster falls into this age group, this is unlikely to be their next all-time fave, but you could do worse.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
