UN Lifts Restrictions on Syrian President Prior to Presidential Visit

United Nations Security Council members approved to a United States-backed measure to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his Washington trip next week.

He became provisional head of state after leading a rebel offensive that removed the previous leader in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of civil war.

America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations said the UN had sent "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" following Assad's ouster.

Sharaa was under UN sanctions while commanding the religious organization the HTS movement, which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. America delisted HTS from a list of foreign terror groups during July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.

The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the penalties, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and to friendly nations for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."

Imminent Washington Talks

President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday follows US President Donald Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" working toward stability to the war-torn country.

Subsequent to their talks, the US president stated Sharaa possessed "a genuine opportunity at pulling it together".

The pair met for the first time during May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through Arab nations.

Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".

His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country prior to breaking relations back in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

Monday's visit is not his initial visit to the United States in the current year. This past fall, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the UN General Assembly in New York in almost 60 years.

Throughout his presentation, he declared the nation was "regaining its deserved status among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
